There is a place where the seascape changes its colors by the day , from light turquoise to intense blue up to become red of tuna's blood  during  Mattanza ,the uneven battle between man and nature: from the golden sunset up to the red fired sunset fisher’s shouts  and popular songs, cialome,  are brought far from the wind , air is smelling of capers lemon flowers rosemary and sage , sun light shows  colors of  marvelous mountain landscapes  while walking through Cardi’s flowers, prickly pears , Zabbarra (Agaves) and swimming among  red corals ,dolphins, high cliffs and  archeological finds: Welcome to Egadi Islands.

Tuna Fishing Mattanza &
Florio Tonnara Musueum/Antiquarium

Between 20th  May and15th June ancient Tuna fishing technique is performed by local fishers;it is possible to joint local people in their efforts.



The  larger and nearest island to Trapani, with its butterfly  shape often ventilated by Flavonio wind from which took the name ,is a true open house where people is simple and gentle.TRuna fishing "La Mattanza "become point of attraction for its high expression of cruelity and ancient , it is the meaning how human being fight leave. around 20 May -15 june
Center/east side of Favignana "la Piana" is largest flat area and  most populated:
Piazza Madrice heart of island and rione S'antanna old part of the fishers village(xvi sec.)  offers small streets  colored by flowers and hand-crafted objects, restaurants with local and fresh season delicies.
By renting a bike or scooter  it is possible to reach  eastern  natural pearls like  Lido Burrone, Cala Azzurra, Cala Rossa, caverns with prehistoric graffiti , Punic  e Christian tombs ;
Landscape offers a lot of quarries filled by Mediterranean  vegetation from  where white stone was extract and used all around Mediterranean area to build houses and castles, this become a particularity landscape of Favignana, intreasting to explore .
Center/West side "il Bosco" Mount Santa Caterina divide the other plane land of  western island; Cala Rotonda ,punta Faraglione,Capo Grosso, sea caves and inaccessible beaches , small islands like Galera e Galeotta.

Inspite more famouse beaches like Lido Burrone , Cala Azzurra & Cala rossa are in the east part of the island , on the other side, west part  it is possible to find wild and lonely small beaches and rocks where to enjoy the nature ,Punta Faraglioni ,Cala del Pozzo,Punta Ferro,in any case  out of august it  is possible find lonely areas all around Favignana.

Archeology in Favignana
Odissea , Book IX , Ulisse reaches Aegades, Goats island.
S.Nicola area offers different Paleolithic, Phoenician , Punic and Roman signs:
in the Pozzo Grotto and Ficarra Grotto used as home there are  Graffiti  and fishes draft, some cross from Christian time being used as grotto for Christian cult ;

Phoenician Village and necropolis(VIII b.c.) ,Greek necropolis, Roman bath called "Woman Bath" feed with sea water by an underground  tunnel .
Uccerie's grotto on the west part of the island ,in the Faraglione area, interesting prehistoric cavern  called as well Stalactites grotto :entry is by a small tunnel which brings to the main room rich in Stalactites and Stalagmites.

Castles built by Norman King Ruggeri II , who transformed the Saracen Towers in mentioned castles, Castle of S.Giacomo was built by Ruggero II too, to fight Saracens and Pirates attacks from the sea.

Walking to East Favignana
,  some 13 KM walking itinerary (around 5 hours, pianure) Starts from main  Harbour direction  Archeological area of S.Nicola across Favignana quarries ,pointing eastward there are  Cala Rossa  Bue Marino,Cala Azzurra all bays where to cool down swimming in the Turquoise sea, back to the road proceed to Punta Longa , small fishervillage and back to the main village..
Trekking to West Favignana Monte Caterina (mt.314), Monte Campano, Punta Ferro,Cala Rotonda, back to Village.
Speleology in Stalactities grotto in Faraglioni area to see mother naturejob of plenty stalactities and stalagmities ;
as well visit grotta del Pozzo and Grotta Ficarra to see ancient graffiti.
Biking all island is quite flat except for central zone where there is montagna Grossa , 300 Mt elevation.

First trace of human being date back to upper Paleolithic , as shown by archeological find and Graffiti. At that time , 10.000 b.c. , all archipelago was attached to sicilian coast.

Path1 Levanzo-Pizzo del monaco - Grotta del Genovese - Cala Tramontana - Capo Grosso - Pizzo del Corvo - Levanzo, around 15 km, 6-7 hours.
Path 2 Levanzo  , faraglioni , Grotta del Genovese , Capo Grosso , Levanzo qround 13 Km, 5 hours.
Path 3 From the village to Grotta del Genovese  and back  around 2.5 hours(excluded grotto visit).

Case Romane
, a Roman construction dated I-II sec. b.C. , probably used for defensive purposes , built on elevation from where it is possible to see up to Sicily coast.

Castello di Punta Troia
During Saracen period , IX sec a.C. , was built a watching tower .On XII sec. King Ruggero II made it stronger following a fortification plan for the Egadi ;On XVII sec Spanish built on the tower the castle now we see. It was used as prison , and in 1798 was jailed Guglielmo Pepe a Revolutionary of Partenopea Republic.

Trekking & natural Paths in Marettimo

From the High cliff of Punta Troia upwards the  green peacks of Monte Falcone, Pizzo del Capraro ,Punta Campana  and downwards till  the  blue sea of punta Bassana many scenarios are offered to whom decide to live the island  walking  through its natural paths; Different itineraries marked by Regional rangers offers indication along the way , however other itineraries can be  hidden by vegetation.
Some possible itineraries:

1 Village-Monte Falcone
Duration:2 h to go ; 1.15 h to come back
Level:  Medium/Difficult last part
Elevation:  685 Mt.
Itinerary :Village - Roman houses (240 mt /30 min.) - Monte Falcone (685mt / 1 h 30 min.)
From village go W and in 30 min. You will reach archeological area of  Roman Houses, rest point with potable water source.
Continue direction NW passing Punta Campana , climbing up to 585 mt between Pizzo del Capraro and Monte Falcone , landscape is already awesome .Continue on difficult path to the top of Monte Falcone and enjoy  the amazing 360 ° view. Alternative to climb to Monte Falcone top  is a path (quite difficult) to Punta Troia (1 h).

2 Village-Punta Troia
Duration: 1.45 h to go; 1.30  h to come back
Elevation 400 mt
From Village go Northwards , after a while from the uphill road  you can admire Scoglio del Cammello and Punta Troia. Keep walking on  downhill  road until the connection of P. Troia to the island.
Go up to the Castle around 100 mt elevation.
Area is intreasting for Beaches of Scalo Maestro and Cala Manione.

3 Punta Troia -Cala Bianca
Duration :1 h to go 1h to come back to P.Troia cross
Elevation:400 mt
From crossroad to P.Troia go NW following northern  coast of Marettimo up to Punta Mugnone from where it is possible to reach and swim in  wonderful Cala Bianca.

4 Village-Punta Libeccio
Duration:1.45 h to go
Elevation:180 mt
Itinerary: Village – Carcaredda Forest (x min.) – Punta Libeccio (x min.)
From Village go southwards , passed  the Cemetery  at the crossroad  turn right following direction Punta Libeccio; at next  cross road  you can choose to go straight on larger path or to turn right  to take bending smaller path passing through a small forest  up to 180 mt. elevation (there you will find another cross to Roman Houses 50 min. walking), follow direction  P. Libeccio  and while admire  the landscape of Punta Bassano , go down through the small Pineta till Rangers house of Carcaredda.
After rest continue walking  on the old dirt road to P. Libeccio , you will find a crossroad to the new road , remain on the dirt one direction NW , after 10 min Lighthouse(built in 1853) will appear at the horizon.
Area is famous for nice for wild landscape and beautiful  sea of Punta Libeccio and Cala Nera (access not easy)

5 Village- Punta Bassano
Duration:1.15 h
Level:Easy / medium last part
Elevation:180 mt
From Village go southwards , pass the crossroad Punta Libeccio and take the dirt road on the left towards the sea.Contiue and you will find the crossroad with direction Punta Bassano , take it and follow the road through the forest. Soon you will reach the connection  between the island and the P. Bassanos , have a look around to the seascape and carry on walking up to the destination , Punta Bassano 180 mt
, best sunset ever.
